Collegium Hungaricum Berlin \u2013 The Culture-Window<\/h1>\n\n

Since november 2007 the Hungarian culture institute Collegium Hungaricum Berlin (CHB) has its home at Dorotheenstra\u00dfe 12, behind the Humboldt University, with a view on the boulevard \u201cUnter den Linden\u201d. A location in the middle of the historic centre of Berlin, right next to the \u201cMuseum Island\u201d. This modern building in a neo-Bauhaus style, designed by Peter P. plays with its fa\u00e7ade with \u201claminarity\u201d and contrast. It includes a 40 m\u00b2 large panorama window with a rear projection. The ground floor room behind the 15 m\u00b2 large front window communicates with the public space as well.<\/p>\n\n

Technical Possibilities<\/strong><\/p>\n\n

The rear projection surface measures 7,10 x 5,70 m and is subdivided in three sections with a thin window frame. It is connecting the second and third floor of the CHB. The projection is using a 15.000 ANSI-Lumen Projector and is clearly visible from the boulevard \u201cUnter den Linden\u201d. Since it is facing south, the projections can only become visible after dawn. It is possible to use several common media and formats that run on a PC. Sound can become audible via, radio-controlled headphones.<\/p>\n\n

The ground floor front window offers the possibility to perform live in the \u201crestaurant\u201d space behind and to show the live recordings just in time on the rear projection surface via the internal computer network.<\/p>\n\n

Current Use<\/strong><\/p>\n\n

During several evenings Scenes from the Moholy-Nagy Galerie of the CHB become visible on the window screen. During Events the screen is used for simulcast to connect to the urban public space. For summertime the \u201eMojito-Screening\u201c, an open-air cinema series is planned.<\/p>\n\n

Model and Motivation<\/strong><\/p>\n\n

The idea of our \u201cstreet-screening\u201d is not a gimmick, yet a necessity. It derives from the character of our building, which is a result of the mission to bring culture out of its niche to the public. Large windows absorb the city and at the same time get the program of our institute across to the people of Berlin. This openness and exchange with the surroundings are our dialogue with Berlin, the communication and the absorption of culture our aim. Our house is projection surface and projector at the same time. Our urban screening on the one hand a metaphor for our intention and on the other hand its direct technical implementation.\u201c (J\u00e1nos Can Togay, Director of the CHB)<\/p>\n\n

Collegium Hungaricum Berlin \u2013 Das Kulturfenster<\/h1>\n\n

Seit November 2007 liegt das ungarische Kulturinstitut Collegium Hungaricum Berlin (CHB) in der Dorotheenstra\u00dfe 12, hinter der Humboldt-Universit\u00e4t, mit direktem Blick auf Unter den Linden. Es ist ein Ort inmitten des historischen Berlins, in unmittelbarer N\u00e4he der kulturtr\u00e4chtigen Museumsinsel. Der Neubau im Neobauhaus-Stil, entworfen von Peter P. Schweger, spielt in seiner Au\u00dfenh\u00fclle mit Fl\u00e4chigkeit und Kontrasten, die Berliner Zeitung nannte ihn \u201eDie wei\u00dfe Kaaba\u201c. Ein 40 m\u00b2 gro\u00dfes Panoramafenster der Frontfassade dient als ganzfl\u00e4chige R\u00fcckprojektionsfl\u00e4che. Der ebenfalls bespielbare Innenraum im Erdgeschoss, mit seiner gro\u00dffl\u00e4chigen Fensterfront tritt zus\u00e4tzlich in einen Dialog mit dem \u00f6ffentlichen Raum.<\/p>\n\n

Technische M\u00f6glichkeiten <\/strong><\/p>\n\n

Die R\u00fcckprojektionsfl\u00e4che ist 7,10 x 5,70 m gro\u00df, unterteilt in drei Scheiben mit schmalen sichtbaren Rahmenr\u00e4ndern und liegt in der zweiten und dritten Etage des CHB. Die Projektion wird gesteuert durch einen 15.000 ANSI-Lumen-Beamer und ist gut von der Stra\u00dfe Unter den Linden aus zu sehen. Da dies die S\u00fcdfassade des Geb\u00e4udes ist, kann die Projektion erst mit Einbruch der D\u00e4mmerung erfolgen. Zuspielf\u00e4hig sind viele aktuelle Medien (u. a. auch BETA) sowie alle Dateiversionen, f\u00fcr die Software f\u00fcr den PC allgemein\u00fcblich vorhanden ist. Ton\u00fcbertragung ist ebenso m\u00f6glich, funkgesteuerte Kopfh\u00f6rer sind vorhanden.<\/p>\n\n

Die grosse Fensterfl\u00e4che im Erdgeschoss bietet die M\u00f6glichkeit, im von der Stra\u00dfe einsehbaren dahinter liegenden Raum des \u201eRestaurant\u201c live zu agieren und das Bild per Hausnetzwerk simultan auf der gro\u00dfen R\u00fcckprojektionsleinwand zu zeigen.<\/p>\n\n

Derzeitige Bespielung<\/strong><\/p>\n\n

An vielen Abenden sind auf dem Screen Szenen aus der hauseigenen Moholy-Nagy Galerie zu sehen, bei Veranstaltungen nutzen wir die M\u00f6glichkeit der Live-\u00dcbertragung in den Stadtraum. F\u00fcr den Sommer ist ein \u201eMojito-Screening\u201c geplant, also Open-Air-Kino.<\/p>\n\n

Modell und Motivation<\/strong><\/p>\n\n

\u201eDie Idee unseres Street-Screening ist kein Gimmick, sondern eine Notwendigkeit. Sie entspringt aus den Beschaffenheiten unseres Geb\u00e4udes, und diese wiederum entspringen aus ihrer Mission, Kultur ad\u00e4quat aus einer Nische heraus in den \u00f6ffentlichen Raum zu holen. Gro\u00dfe Fenster, die die Stadt einverleiben und die zur gleichen Zeit die Inhalte unseres Instituts unmittelbar der Stadt vermitteln. Diese Offenheit: das nach au\u00dfen gekehrte Innere und die verinnerlichte Umgebung ist unser Dialog mit Berlin, das Vermitteln und das Aufnehmen von Kultur.
