Urban Media Culture (avedition, 2012)

The publication "Urban Media Cultures" discusses the risks and potentials of media facades in its spatial and social context. Here international experts in architecture, marketing, technology and culture outline and analyse what impact high-resolution displays, computer-animated light installations or mechanical media screens have on our day to day life and who they change the face of our cities.

Media Architecture Biennale 2010 Exhibition Catalogue (Künstlerhaus, 2010)

The Media Architecture Biennale Exhibition 2010 in Vienna is documented in a catalogue with 140 pages. It documents all the exhibited projects by Realities United, UNStudio and others with pictures and a technical appendix. Moreover it contains introductory theoretical texts by the curators that frame the discourse of the 2010 event.

Media Facades – History, Technology, Content (avedition, 2009)

By the example of spectacular contemporary projects, the book presents recent developments of three-dimensional display technology, showing its significance for our understanding of space and architecture.

Publications

The Media Architecture Institute is a major contributor of books and other publications discussing the intersection of physical and digital space. Since 2009 the Institute has published 7 books and over 15 other articles in peer reviewed conferences and magazines. The publications investigate spatial concepts that are beyond traditional architecture and media art/design as it brings up entirely genuine challenges and opportunities. Since 2012 the Institute is publishing bimonthly in Chinese articles for the PLD magazine China as part of their contribution and commitment in China through their association with the Chinese Central Academy of Fine Arts (CAFA), Beijing and AHL LED, Shenzhen.

Media Architecture Compendium – Digital Placemaking (avedition, 2017)
Luke Hespanhol, M. Hank Haeusler, Martin Tomitsch, Gernot Tscherteu New frontiers for media architecture: This compendium explores how digital media is shaping cities today and in the years to come. It illustrates groundbreaking use of light and media in urban environments through 36 winning or shortlisted entries from the Media architecture Biennale awards in 2014 and 2016 in five categories: animated architecture, Money architecture, Participatory architecture & Urban Interaction, Spatial Media art, Future Trends & Prototypes. New Media Facades – A Global Survey (avedition, 2012)
M. Hank Haeusler, Martin Tomitsch, Gernot Tscherteu The book showcases 33 new international contemporary media facades featuring projects by Asymptote, BIG, Realities United, UNStudio and many more, categorised by continent. Each example is presented in a series of striking photos and analysed in its cultural setting and technological background. The projects are supplemented by 18 interviews with early protagonists, researchers, designers, product developers and many more. New trends, directions and technologies are discussed and matching products round off this global survey of new media facades. (more…)
Urban Media Culture (avedition, 2012)
Gernot Tscherteu with Susa Pop, Ursula Stalder, Mirjam Struppek The publication “Urban Media Cultures” discusses the risks and potentials of media facades in its spatial and social context. Media Architecture Compendium (2010-2012)
The Media Architecture compendium is a regularly updated digital collection of about 46 unique projects exhibited at the Media Architecture Biennale 2010 in Vienna and the Media Architecture Biennale 2012 in Aarhus. (more…)
Infostructures – A transport research project (Freerange Press, 2010)
M. Hank Haeusler, Martin Tomitsch with Nicole Gardner INFOSTRUCTURE presents the vision of interactive and responsive urban public transport environments where new forms of communication and information access are enabled through an overlay of urban digital media technologies. The book explores the augmentation of existing public transport environments with urban digital media technologies, to set in motion a transformation from infrastructure to ‘infostructure(s).’ (more…)

Chromatophoric Architecture: Designing for 3D media facades (Jovis, 2009)
M. Hank Haeusler Future façades will become three-dimensional displays. New developments in display technology, so called voxels allow revolutionary architectural expressions. Whereas spatial expressions till present were determinated by the physical attributes of the building material, voxel displays will shift these borders. By the example of spectacular contemporary projects, the book presents recent developments of three-dimensional display technology, showing its significance for our understanding of space and architecture. Media Facades – History, Technology, Content (avedition, 2009)
M. Hank Haeusler The book introduces a canon of media architectural terminology and traces the history of media facades from early examples of embedding media in architecture. State-of-the-art developments are documented by presenting 36 international projects of contemporary media architecture, classified in seven distinct technical categories. Each example is presented in a series of striking photos together with a brief description of the project and the technology used to realise it. The book is considered as the benchmark for media facades and was sold over 2000 times since its publication. (more…)
